One of today’s most prolific recording artists plays a set with Dawn McCarthy at The New Vintage, June 28, 2015
Will Oldham, better known perhaps as Bonnie Prince Billy is one of American’s most prolific recording artists, with over twenty releases thus far. There aren’t a lot of edgy musical artists here in the midwest, who continue to live in work here at least. I was there to shoot Faun Fables on their summer tour, and I’m guessing Billy got a wild hair and decided he wanted to do a show. A band was quickly assembled and they took the opening act slot. It was magical.
I don’t do much concert photography, I prefer to watch and listen. To be honest, the mechanics of shooting a full band in tricky lighting conditions is more of a challenge than I care to take on. It’s low light and musicians tend to bounce around a bit. I always wanted to be a portraitist, with brushes and paint, and that’s how I approach concert photography. A chance to capture performers doing what they love most.
